, boston, f.b.i., and dzhokhar tsarnaev the name of suspect number two. as you can imagine something like this, social media has information with theories and conspiracy of the shootout and the manhunt in boston. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is following that story from the newsroom. >> the f.b.i. calls it the big electronic dragnet in united states history the first major federal cases where twitter and facebook are in full effect. moments after the bombing, suspects photos were posted and the f.b.i. website crashed. the site now back online and the pictures went viral on social media, twitter the facebook, millions of views and possible sitings in suburban boston area. the manhunt continues for that second suspect still at large, possibly in the watertown, massachusetts area. police are canvassing suburban boston, watertown and surrounding communities for the terrorist who they say is armed and very, very dangerous. >> we believe this to be a terrorist. we believe this to be a man who has come here to kill people. we need to get him in custody. >> that is the word from police offi
in came edge about, massachusetts, a chechen, apparently. dzhokhar tsarnaev. tell us what you know. >> 19 years old from overseas, been in the u.s. for more than a year. both suspects said to be brothers. as we watch that. i want to make one last point here, if i could, come out live here to our location on boylston street. i want the audience to understand just how easy it would have been for these two people to simply walk away from the scene. runners were coming down eastbound here on boylston street. the explosions are dropped at quarter mile down the street. both bombers are walking west on boylston street. it's an easy thing to duck into gloucester or newberry street or com avenue and then cross the river, which is only a quarter mile away and that takes you to the intersection of vasser and main, which is where police were called in last night at 10:30 p.m. after the report of a robbery at a local convenience station. that's really -- that seems to be the best tip yet that we have gotten, to notify authorities that these guys were in the area and they were the people that the f.b
the suspect might be. the suspect who we're looking -- who they're looking for is named dzhokhar tsarnaev. this is his picture. dzhokhar tsarnaev. he is originally of chechen origin. he's lived here quite a long time. he and his brother came here many, many years ago. his brother, tamerlan, with the same last name, he was killed overnight in the shootout we've been talking about with police that john miller just laid out for us in watertown. so they have not found the younger brother yet. he is believed to be heavily armed, perhaps carrying explosives. he's obviously proven to be dangerous. and right now there is just a full-court press trying to find out where he is because until they can neutralize him, there is a potential that the threat goes forward because we don't know what else, if anything, he might have planned or have been up to. and also at the same time, on another channel, investigators are trying to find out if these two brothers were simply working together as a small two-man cell or if they were working with something larger. at this point we have no evidence of anyone el
the question is, is dzhokhar tsarnaev that suspect, in that boat without any way out? and are some of the shots and explosions heard in the last few minutes somehow linked to him, from him, being aimed at him? is he still alive? we just don't know. but we do know that it's on going and it is all happening right now at 67 franklin street in watertown, massachusetts, and f course this comes at a time when this city only minutes earlier had gotten a reprieve from no less than the governor to come out your homes to relax, your guard can be let down. you can ease up and then the shots started firing up. within just the last half hour or so, we're told better than 30 shots fired. and within the last five minutes or so we're told at least three large explosions heard. eric sawn? -- sean in boston with the very latest. do we know in fact that the suspect hiding in that boat backyard is dzhokhar tsarnaev? >> reporter: we only know from reports and from sources it is believed that it is the suspect number two who was, reportedly inside that boat. we heard some of those bangs just a few minutes ago, and
guys are brothers. the man at large is dzhokhar tsarna, tsarnaev and looking to confirm his origin. >> according to mike barnicle and "the boston globe" reporting one of the suspects has lived here for some time, receiving some sort of high school scholarship. >> yeah. the city of cambridge awards a scholarship $2,500 to cambridge high school seniors and others who want to pursue higher education. according to the globe, the man at large, the 19-year-old in the white hat, in 2011, so just two years ago, was the recipient of one of these scholarships. that indicates he has lived in the cambridge area for some time. >> another piece of information that we have picked up over the hours here is that at some time, any time now, the police in boston will be conducting a controlled detonation at the area of calm in charles gate. this is according to their twitter site. i guess if anybody in the area hears something, not to be upset by it because this is a controlled detonation probably, as pete williams was telling us, probably one of the explosives or grenades that were thrown out of the
'll mispronounce his name. dzhokhar tsarnaev. how do you know him, tell us anything you know about him. >> i went to high school with dzhokhar. i knew him as dzhokhar. he graduated below me. he was good friends, worked at harvard university as a lifeguard. yeah, we partied, good high school friends, and a bunch -- all of my high school -- everybody, we're all like in shock. there is no telltale signs of any kind of malicious behavior from dzhokhar. it's coming as a shock really. >> what town did he live in? can you tell us about his family? anything you may know about his life. >> well, we -- i live on columbia street which is just a street over from norfolk street, so, i mean, he lived literally maybe a block away from me. i mean, as far as i know, i didn't know his close personal family, but i mean, i knew dzhokhar, and he didn't show any malicious sign, no evidence that would lead any of to us really believe he would be capable of something like this. >> did you know his older brother. one that was killed in a fire fight with police officers? >> i did not know his older brother. i didn't even
that ended with a surprisingly subdued ending on friday night. 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev was pronounced dead after a dramatic shootout with law enforcement early friday morning. his 19-year-old dzhokhar escaped on foot precipitating a shelter in place order for the entire boston area. but the much sought after armed and dangerous teen was found wounded and incoherent in a boat parked in the backyard of a suburban watertown home. discovered not by the hundreds of armed officers who had been searching for him for hours but by the home's owner, reportedly out for a smoke. with one assailant dead and the other in police custody, the people of watertown and the entire boston area expressed their enormous gratitude and sense of relief with spontaneous cheers and applause on friday night. the crisis is over. now the politics begin and this is where our responsibility in the media shifts. in the heat of the crisis, media take on the job of informational clearinghouse, keeping the public up to date, sharing critical information and get the information out right and fast. granted, those are goals
